Dwarven kinds

Four kinds of dwarf, plus a mix

Each kind is a flavour rather than a strict rule, so it slots into any hold or setting. Pick one to match your clan, or browse Any.

Mountain

Stone-and-steel names from the high peaks, like Brokkar Granitebrow, Brynja Steelbeard.

Hill

Hearty hold-names of oak and ale, like Dagna Oakshield, Hagen Copperbrow.

Deep

Under-deep names of coal and shadow, like Durmek Blackvein, Vondra Deepdelver.

Forge

Smith-clan names of gold and ember, like Hagdan Goldhammer, Sigrun Anvilbreaker.

Naming tips

Making a name worthy of a dwarf

Match the hold

Keep one kind across a clan so names sound related. A trade outpost might blend two, so try generating both and mixing.

Use register for rank

Set Register to Clan for hold and clan ties, Forged for craft-names won at the anvil, or Old for ancestral lines.

Refine, don't restart

Found a first name you love but the wrong surname? Choose it, hit Refine, lock the first name and shuffle the rest.

Questions

Dwarf name generator FAQ

Yes. You can generate unlimited dwarf names for free, with no sign-up. Copy or save any you like and use them however you want.
Absolutely. The names suit dwarf player characters and NPCs in D&D 5e, Pathfinder and most fantasy RPGs. Pick a kind, generate, and drop your favourite onto the character sheet.
Each kind is a flavour rather than a strict rule. Mountain leans on stone and steel, Hill on oak, ale and hold-life, Deep on coal and shadow from the under-deeps, and Forge on gold, ember and the anvil. Leave it on Any for a mix, or pick one to match your clan.
Open Options and set Gender to Masculine or Feminine. Leaving it on Neutral gives a mix of both. First names are drawn from the matching pool for the kind you chose.
Register changes the kind of surname you get. Common gives plain hold-names, Clan adds clan and hold ties such as 'of Clan Stonehelm', Forged gives craft-names earned at the anvil, and Old uses ancestral patronymics. Leave it on Any for a spread.
Surnames are included by default. Turn them off in Options for first names only, or use Refine on a chosen name to swap just the surname while keeping the first name.
Often, yes. Dwarven family names tend to celebrate stone, metal and deeds (Stonehelm, Goldhammer, Deepdelver), so the generator builds many surnames by joining a theme word to a trade or trait. Clan and Old registers add holds and ancestry instead.
No. Each batch is checked against the names you have already seen this visit, so you can generate again and again without repeats. Use Previous to step back to an earlier batch.
